Tony produces two ranges of replica guitar: 'Tony Rockett Custom' and 'Finesse'. Both result in custom built guitars, so what exactly is the difference? Hopefully this page will explain all!

  Tony Rockett Custom Replicas
Back in the 1950s and 1960s in the days before electronically controlled CNC wood cutting machines, guitars were hand made by highly skilled luthiers. Tony Rockett Custom guitars are made in exactly the same way. These guitars literally begin life as carefully selected pieces of wood. No CNC cutters here! Tony crafts his necks and bodies on good old-fashioned overhead routers and spindle moulders, before he hand finishes them on belt sanders. This is just how guitars were being made back in the 1950s. Every Tony Rockett Custom guitar really does have a soul of its own, and owning one of Tony's Custom guitars is the closest you can get to owning an original vintage 50+ year old guitar.
Customers can have as much input into the guitar build process as they wish. For example, you may want to request a specific neck profile, finger board radius, or fret size. Or you might just want Tony to reproduce an exact copy of either Rick's or Francis's guitar.

The wood is carefully selected to duplicate the famous Quo guitars; American baseball bat ash for a Parfitt replica, and swamp ash for a Rossi replica. The body on a Francis copy will be made up of three pieces of swamp ash, cut and joined to exactly replicate the real thing.

Tony's Custom guitars are fitted with the highest quality hardware and pickups.

Any copy of Rick's guitar will be fitted with high quality 'vintage' pickups, and a copy of Francis's will be fitted with Fender-Lace Sensor, Seymour Duncan 'Cool-Rails', or 'vintage' pickups dependent on the requested year configuration.

Finally, every Tony Rockett Custom guitar is delivered in a high quality 'vintage' tweed hard case.

Owning any hand crafted musical instrument is really something very special!

  Finesse Replicas

In May 2007 Tony introduced his new Finesse - or Standard - range of guitars.

These guitars are still assembled and finished by Tony, but he makes use of part-made bodies and part-made necks to keep the price down.

The body blanks are still routed out by Tony, and he also carefully selects the bodies to best match a Rick or Francis replica, but it is unlikely that the selected body will exactly match the original.

The necks can still be profiled to meet any specific request from a customer.

The Finesse range of replicas of the Quo guitars crucially retain the key elements of the original guitars. For example, Tony will not be make a copy of Francis Rossi's main green guitar fitted with a one piece maple neck. Tony will use a two piece maple capped neck.

However, the Finesse necks will not be exact copies of the originals. The positions markers ('dots') are not sized or spaced as per the 1950/60 originals. The rosewood finger board on Rick's will be a slab board rather than the curved veneer found on the guitars from that period. Finally, Tony uses necks for his Finesse range which facilitate truss rod adjustment via the headstock rather than the heel.

Tony uses lace-sensor look-a-like humbucker pickups for copies of Rossi's guitar, and alnico single-coil pickups for Rick's.

With each G&L bridge costing over £100 to import from the USA its just not possible to use these on the cheaper Finesse guitars. But Tony was keen to use a quality bridge, which also retained the look of a G&L and a Mighty-Mite fits the bill perfectly.

The actual finish, and attention to detail re the replication of the scratches and 'dings', is exactly the same on the Finesse copies as per the Customs.

All Finesse guitars are delivered in a quality gig bag, and just as the Custom range come ready to play with a professional setup and fret dress.

  Francis Rossi Replicas
Tony Rockett Custom Body Finesse
Francis Rossi's main green guitar body is made up of three pieces of swamp ash. This is exactly replicated by Tony when making his Custom models. Tony even tries to match the grain pattern of each piece back to the original. The Finesse bodies are high quality, but alder may be used instead of swamp ash, and bodies may be one or two piece rather than three.

The Finesse bodies arrive in Tony's workshop already cut to shape but un-routed. This allows Tony to use a body blank for either a right-handed or left-handed guitar. Also, different routings are needed for the different configurations of Francis's guitar.

Tony Rockett Custom Neck Finesse
Both versions come with a two piece maple capped neck. Tony insists that all his replicas of the famous green guitar carry the correct type of neck.

We've seen many replicas of Francis's guitar presented with a single piece maple neck, which is completely wrong! These incorrect necks are easily spotted by the 'skunk' stripe which runs down the back of the neck.

The Custom neck can be an exact copy of the original right down to the profile, the size and spacing of the position markers, fret size, and the radius of the finger board. Or, Tony can tailor the neck to your exact specification. Note also that Francis has had an extra (22nd) fret squeezed onto the end of his standard neck. Tony replicates this exactly on his Custom copies, whereas the Finesse models facilitate the extra fret by way of an extended finger board back over the heel.

The Finesse necks only have limited scope for profile adjustment. They have a flatter radius, standard dot spacing, and medium frets. Truss rod adjustment is via the headstock rather than the heel (*).

(*) Says Tony: 'I have chosen this type of truss rod access for my entry level guitars simply to make the setup of the guitar easier for the player. Of course it is not correct for a Quo replica, but this type of truss rod access is generally expected on modern guitars. Customers should also note that the position markers are not located correctly for exact Quo replicas either, but if you're interested in an exact replica then you need to invest in a Tony Rockett Custom guitar. That said however, you should note that the Rossi Finesse replicas carry a two piece maple neck, which is absolutely key for any copy of this guitar.'

Tony Rockett Custom Bridge Finesse
Custom models are fitted with a G&L saddle lock bridge.

These are purchased from G&L and imported from the USA.

Tony uses a Mighty-Mite bridge for his Finesse copies (centre right).

In the picture on the right, the bridge on the left is the Hipshot, which is used by Fender on the Francis Rossi signature guitar.

Tony Rockett Custom Pickups Finesse
Custom copies of Rossi's guitar are fitted with exactly the same pickups as used by Francis.

Tony uses Fender-Lace Sensors and Seymour-Duncan 'Cool-Rails'. Replicas of the guitar in it's tune-o-matic configuration make use of high quality 'vintage' single coil pickups.

Finesse models are fitted with humbucker 'lace sensor' look-a-likes or alnico single coil pickups depending on the configuration being replicated.

  Rick Parfitt Replicas
Tony Rockett Custom Body Finesse
Tony makes use of carefully selected American 'baseball bat' ash when making Custom copies of Rick's famous white guitar.

As outlined earlier, Finesse replicas are built using quality body blanks, which may be ash or alder.

Tony Rockett Custom Neck Finesse
Once again Tony's Custom Parfitt replicas are exact reproductions of the necks made back in the 1960s. The maple neck is fitted with a curved rosewood veneer fingerboard. The dots are sized and positioned just as per the original.

Finesse rosewood necks carry a 'slab' rosewood fingerboard.

The Finesse necks have a flatter radius, standard dot spacing, and medium frets. Truss rod adjustment is via the headstock rather than the heel.

Tony Rockett Custom Pickups Finesse
Tony makes use of 'GFS' pickups and electronics on his replica guitars. Custom models are fitted with 'vintage' (alnico) single coil pickups, and the Finesse models carry standard single coil pickups (also alnico).

Says Tony: 'Everyone has an opinion on pickups. I've been in this business for over 20 years now, and have found nothing to beat the GFS models I use, and I've tried them all. The sound and reliability is second to none. I use them in my own guitars, which believe me get a serious hammering on the road with Bogus Quo! To me, the alnico pickups I use in my replicas give a truer sound, and the vintage model in particular accurately replicates the old guitars from the 50s and 60s.'

The GFS electrics are the same in both the Custom and Finesse models, however Tony makes use of cloth style wires in his Custom models to accurately recreate even the wiring of the vintage guitars.

  Common Features

The finish Tony applies to his replica guitars is exactly the same whether it's a Custom guitar or a Finesse guitar he is making.

The same goes for the time spent replicating all the marks, scratches and 'dings' that you see on the famous Quo guitars.

The photographs (left and below right) show three Finesse and one Custom body just after relic process has been completed.

Both models are fitted with 'Kluson' style tuners (although Custom Rossi replicas carry 'dual line' Klusons).

Both models are fitted with the same GFS electronic parts (pots etc).

Both Parfitt models carry domed top brass control knobs, and both Rossi models have the flat topped metal control knobs.

Both Parfitt models have the same fixed 'tailpiece' style bridge.

Finally ALL of Tony's guitars are delivered with a full setup and are ready to play. Tony will set your guitar up with whatever gauge of strings you ask for - he realises that not everyone can handle Rick's 'tramlines'!
