This Rick Parfitt 'Special' is a converted Squier guitar, and belongs to 'Status-Adam-Quo' from the official Status Quo web site message board.

As far as we know, all the work done on the guitar as it appears in the first few pictures (below) is down to Adam himself. A fantastic job mate!

However, the guitar arrived on Tony's workbench to have the original bridge replaced with a fixed 'tailpiece' arrangement...

Safely in Holbury... ... and on Tony's workbench. Tony checks the gauge of Adam's strings..

.. 13 through 56. One brand new tailpiece.. .. and 'ash-tray' Tele bridge.

The bridge will be cut in half and the saddles discarded.   Adam's guitar in pole position in the workshop!

Guitar in bits and conversion underway..

Note how the original strings holes have been filled and new ones drilled further back in the correct position. These have then been angled forward to meet the old holes through to the back of the guitar. The 'earth' wire is ready to be connected to one of the tailpiece pegs.

The 'ash-tray' bridge is cut. Ferrules are fitted. The bridge pickup is now in place..

.. as is the new 'tailpiece' bridge.

Groves are cut into the tailpiece and the guitar is strung.

The conversion is complete. The Allen key needed to adjust the intonation screws is taped between the control knobs. This close-up of the new bridge shows the intonation adjustment screws and the ferrules.

Before attempting this type of bridge conversion on your own guitar, you need to consider the following points:

The style of bridge found on most modern Tele type guitars (as per Adam's original bridge shown in the 'before' photographs above) is not fitted in the same way as the original 'ash-tray' type bridges.

- Three of the screws used to attach the bridge to the body are located behind the string holes rather than in front, so they will show when the tailpiece is fitted. The only way to fully disguise these is a full re-spray after the holes have been filled.

- The string holes through the body are located approx 5mm closer to the neck, and you will need to compensate for this when fitting the ferrules.

- The tailpiece itself does not come fitted with the intonation adjustment screws, you will need to drill and fit these yourself!

- Be aware that many of the cheaper bodies have huge routings under the bridge for the rear bridge pickup. Adam was lucky that his Squier had a standard socket for this pickup.

The above conversion also included a full setup, which involved oiling and adjusting the neck, and a 'fret dress'. The tailpiece has also been 'distressed' to fit the look of the guitar.
